[symb-[i/o]-te]+[“the being formerly known as onyx ashanti”]=…onyx:em-[i/o]:sonaut-[i/o]… is the name of an identity transition, a path of self-learning. Onyx Ashanti, artist, musician, performer, programmer, former digital busker, and inventor of Sonocybernetics, is designing a process for reprogramming himself utilizing his own musical comprehension and sound design. He believes that musical comprehension of information, grafted into sonomorphic structures built within PureData, a Digital signal processing language, will result in thought forms that are more capable of representing higher order thought resonances. He created a bodyware system with prostheses/controllers made with 3D printers that allow him to articulate the electronic sound starting from the movements of his body: fingers, hands, head. It’s a body dressed in an extravagant decorative livery, a set of artifacts like a ‘tech/ethnic’ jewelry, a costume used to carry out a ritual that allows cyberism to go back upstream along remote Afro currents. This opens the way to a new kind of imagination, related to Black Quantum Futurism, where thoughts are transduced into data-music, called Metabit and capable of projecting information that is simultaneously understandable as human musical structure and computer data. “Currently my mind is filled with functional models of a designed autonomy.” EM-[i/o]:Son-Aut-[i/o];prototype self presents, in practice, the evolution of this process of integration between thought and device, interface and body, towards an increasingly accurate manipulation. This research, which is not exclusively of a technical nature, invests the form of thought itself, training Ashanti in view of a higher-order representative capacity, dealing with a new concept of space/time, language, and the deep meaning of transitionality. But above all it represents a vision in which music becomes a tool to comprehend the complexity produced by the overwhelming presence of data technology in our lives ruined by anxiety.
