In ENDO, originally conceived while in residence in Japan, choreographer David Wampach alongside his long-term interpreter Tamar Shelef, creates a piece that offers a radical take on the body. ENDO could be a lunatic re-enactment imagined by a psychotropic mind, where the performers play an exuberant game with the present, with a hint of ecstasy and intoxication. ENDO re-examines the heritage and customs of performance art that ran in parallel to endoticism (a theorethical movement of the ’60s against all forms of exoticism), in which anti-conformist artists like novelist, photographer and filmaker Shuji Terayama and members of the Gutaï group in Japan came to prominence. ENDO puts the body as the centre of danced performance, at once material, media, instrument, subject, and spectator, nourishing the postures adopted on stage, as engaging politically as it is aesthetically.

David Wampach, french choreographer, started out studying medicine. He quickly became interested in live performance and studied dance at ex.e.r.ce/CCN Montpellier and PARTS in Brussels. In 2001 he started to produce under the association Achles with a personal approach borrowed from theatre and plastic art. Grotesque, yet minimalist, his work includes pieces that freely revisit the history of modern dance, explore body states and the limits of experience (ecstatic states, intoxication, inebriation..). His radical reworking of fundamentals is driven by a desire to break away from of common sense and taboos. He created the solo CIRCONSCRIT (2004), BASCULE (2005), a radical and hypnotic trio to the rhythm of metronomic music, QUATORZE (2007), AUTO (2008) with pianist Aurélien Richard, BATTERIE (2008) and BATTEMENT (2009), a variation on the ‘grand battement’, the ballet step. In 2011 he created CASSETTE, a Latino version of the ballet Casse-noisette, and SACRE, a reading of Sacre du Printemps for Montpellier Dance Festival. In 2012-13, Wampach continued his work on ritual and trance, directing his short film RITE and creating the solo TOUR, in which he portrays a primal being invaded by the rhythm of his inhalations and exhalations, composing a visual and acoustic portrait. VEINE (2014) is a duet for urban spaces. His latest pieces URGE (2015) and ENDO (2017) were created within the framework of the festival Montpellier Danse.
