A P N E A

performance

A P N E A is focused on immersion: the creation of a space in suspension, as though underwater, physically and mentally suspended. In the absence of water, sound waves become the substitute of the liquid element. A P N E A is the temporary cessation of breathing. Aiming to ‘immortalize’ the body by means of air deprivation, specifically during water submersion, we dive into an atemporal territory, created by the vibrant quality of underwater motion. We arrive at that place of discomfort that is created by the lack of oxygen and water pressure, and, experiencing that state, a performative event unfolds that confronts us with what it is normally taken for granted: the vital and constant presence of air all around us.

Rodrigo Sobarzo de Larraechea, originally from Chile, studied choreography at the SNDO – School for New Dance Development in Amsterdam and was a resident at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. His works MINING (2010), UNITED STATES (2011), THE HARVEST (2012), A P N E A (2013), /S ITE S\ (2014), []remoTe sense[] (2015), Prins Of Ne†works (2016), esTuar¡no (2017) and mUseo de Agua (2017) seek to envelope its viewer in visual introspection by actively subtracting the importance of the human within performance art. Crafting a shielded presence that allows shades to step in. Furthermore he has a strong interest in subculture and sub-cultural production by means of digital connectivity through various internet sites and social networks
